Stiff neck, whiplash, cervical arthritis or cervical hernia, post-operative or prevention. The cervical collar is prescribed for different pathologies and problems and for longer or shorter periods. Wearing a cervical collar is annoying, but it is always the only solution to have relief and comfort to the neck for a chronic illness or to heal in the event of a trauma – the classic rear-end collision, for example.

We have to check carefully with the doctor which type we have to buy and how many hours we have to wear it.
There are essentially two types of cervical collar: soft collar and the rigid collar. They are not suitable for all diseases and it is not always necessary to wear them 24 hours a day without interruption.

Rigid cervical collar: safe rescue

A rigid cervical collar is the most used when you want to securely block the movements of the neck. After an accident, a fall, a violent traumatic movement, and also as an important prevention aid.

We are usually told to wear a rigid cervical collar, without or with a chin support, or a semi-rigid collar, for at least 10-15 days. It is important to follow the doctor's instructions!

Soft collar: preferring it while sleeping

Unless specific indications, at night it is advisable to wear a soft cervical collar because it helps to maintain stability, but without stiffness that could threaten the muscles of the neck.

1. Hernia and stiff neck - Let's check with the doctor what is the right model to buy. If necessary, let's make sure to buy a collar that specifically protects the intervertebral disc that compresses the nerve roots and causes pain.

2. Fabric - We have always to prefer a collar covered with cotton: breathable, light and comfortable.

3. Position - The best sleeping position with a cervical collar is on the back. There is a greater discharge of muscle tension and less pain, even during the day.

4. Pillow - When you sleep with a collar you have to choose the pillow, or even eliminate it, according to the doctor's indication. It is especially important to respect the curvature and the space between the neck and the shoulders, which is different for each person and for each pillow.
